I remember the era of what I call the Eyeball-Design era. I simply call this period, around years 1999 to 2000 Eyeball-Design era since many designs tend too look like Ryan Lacdao’s www.eyeball-design.com website. It was like the tech era where many designs looked like they were part of the computer game Starcraft.
Then came the normal websites with all the basic stuff, and design started to evolve to what it is today. The topbar, sidebar, some header graphic, the footer, main content area, etc. Playing with all kind of navigation and folder tab type of navigation was also a hit at around 2000 onwards.
Today design seems to use white space very well. Not using plain background, use of faint gradients and good use of curves. Drop shadows and 3d icons and big white borders seem to be the design trends today. One good example of a web design of today’s trends is the website of MindComet Interactive Agency. I personally like their website because it has good use of curves and rounded corners. Good use of gradients, faint shadows and the aqua shine look and feel. Builds their site in tableless CSS. Although uses heavy flash with streaming media, the site still has enough text content to keep it searcheable. 3D icons give a nice touch and the color scheme is pretty consistent throughout the pages. Their site looks like a good example of the current Web 2.0 trends today. Highly interactive, good aesthetics and very functional.
